No George Naopu, what a joke. He's had a very solid Air NZ Cup, can play in the locks or loose forwards. Thought the Highlanders would have signed him up for sure. Also Michael Johnson is another Magpie to miss out, he's a fukn workhorse!!!!
2 Hendo Maroon, on 10/11/2009 at 22:53
Oh and Chris Jack back in the Crusaders Squad!!! But no Hayman
3 Hendo Maroon, on 10/11/2009 at 22:58
Oh and no room for Taniela Moa in that Blues squad now Alby is there. They've gone with Chris Smylie instead!
AH! Theres so many changes!
Kirkpatrick has gone to the Blues...Bowden to Crusaders, Brett to Blues.
Should definitely be more Magpies getting selected after the impressive season they've had.
Michael Witt obviously didn't do enough to get into that Highlanders squad.

You beat me to it Hendo
Just to discuss it from a Canes perspective:
- Drafting Tyson Keats is a massive slap in the face to the other halfbacks in the Canes catchment area
- Drafting 3 outside players kinda contradicts the massive talent pool that the Canes have and was a mistake IMO - though apparantly Jason Kawau's case is an exception as he specifically asked to go to the Canes (declining an invitation to the Highlanders) as his GF lives in Wellington.
- Dane Coles is VERY lucky to be picked ahead of Ged Robinson - let's hope he can sort his sh!t out this time...
- Daniel Ramsay has a right to feel very hard done by to miss selection anywhere after a very solid season with the Lions - let's hope he doesn't skip the country as a result...
- Daniel Kirkpatrick getting preferred to the Blues over Daniel Bowden is a VERY interesting decision by Pat Lam - although it's possible Blackadder just pinched Bowden first and Kirkpatrick was the second choice.
- Fa'atonu Fili missing out all over the show is another disappointment, but to be fair there are arguably better 10's across the board
- Jacob Ellison can consider himself VERY lucky to retain selection after a shocking season, he can by no means consider himself secure as the benchman - personally I'd prefer Perenise and Tialata to start with Schwalger on the bench - and I hate Schwalger...
- The massively underrated Serge Lilo once again submits to the draft, this time to the Blues
- Very glad Cooper didn't take Paul Perez as previously predicted by journos - he's a good player but is up for conviction of beating his partner and you sure as hell don't want that kinda bad press in your team. Andre Taylor is a great talent and will certainly be competing with David Smith.
Possible Canes 22 (combination of prediction and preference):
1. Perenise

haha it's all very exciting, I do love Super squad announcement day, really just like seeing how many magpies made the cut, this year not enough!! Naopu would be gutted.
7 Pantherus, on 10/11/2009 at 23:14
Yeah Naoupu is hard done by - missed out due to Setephano getting prefernce and then Nasi Manu in the draft. He would'e done well at the Blues...

That's a very nice tight five. Southland Stars Rutledge, Mackintosh and Bekhuis teaming up with Magpies beast Newland and All Black Tom Donnelly. Loose forwards are decent. Backs are a little bit weak but still have got some potential, wouldn't mind seeing Berquist shift out to 12 and Robinson getting a start at 10.

That Blues side is looking very good. Although I still don't think Stephen Brett is very good. The loose forwards are an issue but the tight 5 is probably best in the comp.

13 Hendo Maroon, on 11/11/2009 at 01:28
Yea I do like your backline I'm just not sold on Hayward. Think the Hurricanes backline is still stronger. Nonu and Smith would rip Shoey and Hayward apart
14 willyhbhs, on 11/11/2009 at 01:35
hayward will be an all black next year... mark my words hendo. i actually believe the highlanders can foot it with the crusaders for top NZ franchise. a very tough and no nonesense forward pack, with enough flair in the backline to do the business. plus they don't have the ego factor dragging them down that seems to dog the hurricanes and blues
15 Pantherus, on 11/11/2009 at 01:52
Hayward couldn't make the starting lineup for the Highlanders this year except for injuries, and you reckon he'll be an AB by next year? Bollocks.
He's got promise, but is yet to show it at higher levels. However Nonu and Smith could possibly both leave soon after 2011 WC so that'll open the door for someone to partner Kahui in a new-look midfield (provided Kahui doesn't jump ship before then).

Blues starting XV looks good. If they get some luck on the injury front and Brett delivers on the hype, we may have a decent season.
Our weakness, as it was this year, is in the lack of depth, especially amongst the forwards. If Woody, Williams, Kaino and Mealamu stay injury free and play the whole series, that'll go a long way to achieving some consistency.
And I'd like to see Toeava get an extended run at 13 next year. I still think he's the sweetest passer in the country and a midfield of him and McAlister, while potentially erratic, will provide plenty of x factor.
If that means playing someone a little more conservative at FB, like Paul Williams, that may be a good thing. Especially against the SA teams.
17 Pantherus, on 11/11/2009 at 02:20
I thought Tuitavake jumped ship to go overseas? Or does that start after the S14?

I'll be interested to see what the Chiefs loose forwards trio will be, will they go with
1. 6. Messam 7. Latimer 8. Lauaki
2. 6. Messam 7. Latimer 8. Bourke
or will Messam play at 8 with Lauaki at 6....
I think option 2 would be the best with Lauaki coming off the bench, Bourke was very impressive in the Air NZ Cup this season.
